Why Study Film at Ashbourne?

Film transcs mere entertnment; it serves as a window into our world, reflecting societal values, historical contexts, cultural nuances, and experiences. Studying film enables us to develop critical skills for interpreting narratives within this pervasive medium.

At Ashbourne College, we introduce students to the multifaceted aspects of cinema through an array of films, encouraging them to explore themes, delve into various styles of writing and directing, and understand behind cinematic production.

Under the tutelage of Dennis Fulcher and Alberto Lado Rey – our Multimedia Faculty Head and Film Studies tutor respectively – we empower students with technical expertise and analytical acumen. We utilize industry-standard software such as Final Cut Pro to allow students to produce their own films and videos, thereby equipping them with invaluable skills that are highly sought after in careers within cinema, media, arts, and beyond.

This course complements studies in other arts disciplines like Art, Graphics, English Literature, Drama and Theatre Studies, as well as history or politics.

Notable Achievements

Alumnus Antony, who excelled in Film Studies A, English Literature A, Russian A* and French A, went on to earn a First Class BA Honours degree in Practical Filmmaking from university. He now thrives as an indepent filmmaker having won awards for his short documentary film.

Charli, another outstanding student, received prse for her animated drama '8', winning Best Short Film award and being selected as the Overall Winner. Her work encompassed various creative elements like animation design using Photoshop and a graphic tablet, score composition using Logic Pro, orchestration of music, recording voiceovers, and more.

Post-Ashbourne Career

Alumni with backgrounds in Film Studies are well-positioned to pursue higher education at prestigious institutions across the UK, including Warwick University, King’s College London, Queen Mary University of Edinburgh, UCL, Oxford University, East Anglia, Plymouth, and Gloucestershire.

The competitive nature of breaking into the film industry is undeniable; however, there's a myriad of pathways for students to explore. With their creative insight, analytical mindsets, and technical prowess, our alumni could become directors of blockbuster or art-house films, scriptwriters, music composers, critics, visual, sound or music editors, art directors, prop creators, program ideators, game developers, marketing professionals, or online sensations like YouTube personalities.

Our curriculum encompasses a comprehensive exploration of film history, theory, genres, and production techniques. We delve into film analysis, critical thinking in film studies, scriptwriting, filmmaking processes, cinematic aesthetics, industry practices, cultural and historical contexts, and more.

The course is expertly guided by Dennis Fulcher, our Multimedia Faculty Head, and Alberto Lado Rey, our Film Studies tutor. Both bring extensive knowledge and professional experience to enrich student learning experiences.
