Review Soul Movie Review: Pixar's Existential Masterpiece Takes an Emotional Trip into the Metaphysical World

Pixar Animation Studios has once agn created a cinematic marvel with its latest film, Soul. The movie is directed by Pete Docter and co- Kemp Powers, who have masterfully woven a story that transcs the typical animation genre to delve into profound existential themes.

The narrative kicks off in familiar Pixar territory: New York City. Joe Gardner voiced by Jamie Foxx, an enthusiastic music teacher with dreams of becoming a jazz pianist, takes an unexpected tumble down a manhole while chasing after his missing saxophone. This event marks the beginning of an extraordinary adventure that defies conventional expectations and leads him into the metaphysical realm.

Soul stands out as a deeply adult-themed film within Pixar's repertoire, offering viewers stunning animation, delightful characters, and witty humor that is both accessible for children and resonant for adults. The movie expertly weaves together heartfelt emotions with philosophical questions about purpose, passion, and the essence of life, making it feel like an existential journey for its audience.

Although med at a younger demographic, Soul's soulful exploration transcs age barriers, inviting viewers to ponder their own paths and dreams in a visually captivating universe that Pixar is renowned for creating.

Pixar continues to be a crown jewel in American cinema thanks to the vision of director Pete Docter, known for his prior masterpieces Up and Inside Out. His ability to visually express complex emotions through animation reaches new heights with Soul.

TV Shows and Streaming Video

Kristin Scott Thomas, from her early film roles in acclmed movies like The English Patient and Random Hearts, had previously expressed disinterest in television work when asked about a potential transition from the big screen to the small one. However, she's now embraced TV more than ever before through series that showcase her talent.

Five years ago, while discussing the idea of joining Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey a role for which she was later prsed, Thomas described her initial reluctance towards television with a dismissive tone:

It just goes on and on, she sd. I get terribly bored. Series bore me.

But times have changed. After a brief but mesmerizing appearance in Fleabag, followed by her more recent involvement in Slow Horses on Apple TV+, Scott Thomas has not only adapted to television's evolving landscape but thrived within it.

The dynamic interaction between her and Gary Oldman, playing MI5's second-in-command Diana Taverner opposite his character Jackson Lamb a defrocked agent with a knack for unconventional strategies, became one of the highlights that drew critical acclm. This partnership has been lauded by audiences and critics alike over two years since Slow Horses' fourth season concluded on October 9th.

The show, which initially received little promotion but amassed a dedicated fan base, has managed to turn heads as it winds down its runtime amidst high prse across media platforms. Among those conversations is the recognition of Kristin Scott Thomas's contribution as Diana Taverner.
